WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD
It's hard to believe, but the men were even more weepy than usual on Episode 5 of the first-ever season of ABC’s The Golden Bachelorette (airing Wednesday nights on ABC, 8-10 p.m. ET; streaming on Hulu the next night). Eleven of the original 24 men remained, each still vying for the love of Joan Vassos, 61. But Joan continued to struggle with her feelings for John, her beloved late husband of 32 years. He seems ever on her mind as she labors to find love again on national television (as one does).
The episode also offered a few surprises, including the three men she chose to send home at the end of the show:
Mark, 57, the handsome, white-bearded widower and Army veteran from Leesville Louisiana, and the youngest in the group
Jonathan, 61, the buff, sensitive shipping consultant from Iowa who had, Joan said, an “adorable dimple”
Keith, 62, the big (6’5” tall and 240 pounds), gruff-voiced “girl dad,” who received the coveted first impression rose, but seemed to lose his mojo by episode 4
The four who remain for Episode 6 — Frenchman Pascal, 69; earnest and amorous Chock, 60; regular-dude Jordan, 61; and ER doctor Guy, 66 — will take Joan to meet their families on a high-stakes hometown date.
But that'll come later. Here are some more highlights from and observations about Episode 5.
The Bachelor Mansion was quiet — too quiet
Pascal, the diva-esque Chicago hair salon owner who’d previously paid a fellow roommate $100 a load to do his laundry, was caught on camera in his underwear steaming his own (probably designer) shirt. With Gregg the snorer and his other three roomies now gone, he’s alone. “I feel like I miss them,” he said, endearingly (yup, we like Pascal now!).
